Tết - Chinese New Year Vietnam

Vietnamese New Year, more commonly known by its shortened name Tết or "Tết Nguyên Đán", is the most important and popular holiday and festival in Vietnam. It is the Vietnamese New Year marking the arrival of spring based on the Chinese calendar, a lunisolar calendar. The name Vietnam New Year is Sino-Vietnamese for Feast of the First Morning, derived from the Hán nôm characters 節 元 旦.Tết is celebrated on the same day as Chinese New Year, though exceptions arise due to the one-hour time difference between Hanoi and Beijing resulting in the alternate calculation of the new moon. It takes place from the first day of the first month of the Lunar calendar (around late January or early February) until at least the third day. Many Vietnamese prepare for Tết by cooking special holiday foods and cleaning the house. There are a lot of customs practiced during Tết, such as visiting a person's house on the first day of the new year (xông nhà), ancestral worshipping, wishing New Year's greetings, giving lucky money to children and elderly people, and opening a shop.
Tết is also an occasion for pilgrims and family reunions. During Tết, Vietnamese visit their relatives and temples, forgetting about the troubles of the past year and hoping for a better upcoming year. They consider Tết to be the first day of spring and the festival is often called Hội xuân (spring festival).

  • For several years, we at the Hanoi Elegance Hotel group have been travelling to Hoi An on business and have stayed in many of the town’s hotels. Although over the years Hoi An’s tourist industry has grown and developed, in our opinion we feel the town’s hotel industry does not fully meet guests’ expectations. The 4 and 5 star hotels are certainly well appointed with good facilities and ambiance, but they lack detail and an attentive service. And the prices are often too high in relation to the standard of service.

2 and 3 star hotels have a more personal, intimate feel and are certainly a lot cheaper. But in turn their facilities and amenities are not up to international standards due to the cost cutting and poor construction. Therefore visitors to Hoi An often have to compromise between facilities, price and service when choosing where to stay.

We wanted to address this issue. We decided to build a hotel in Hoi An where visitors can have a comfortable and luxurious stay in a resort-style hotel at an affordable price. The hotel opened in August 2013 under the name of Essence Hoi An Hotel & Spa.

Located on Hung Vuong Street, on the edge of Hoi An’s old town and not far from the Japanese Covered Bridge, this brand new 4+ star resort-hotel with 5 star service nestles on the edge of quiet lush green paddy fields away from the crowds of the old town.

Set in a tropical garden, the style embodies authentic Hoi An charm mixed with modern influences. Our guest rooms have either balconies or large windows bringing you close to nature in a luxurious and comfortable setting. A couple can enjoy their stay in a Deluxe room or Suite while a Family room with balcony or a Luxurious Pool View Suite with connecting rooms are large enough for a family of 4/5. . We provide private transfers from Da Nang airport or rail station, daily buffet breakfast, morning Tai Chi, afternoon tea and sunset cocktails as well as many other complimentary services and amenities.

From the hotel, you can take a leisurely stroll into the Old Town or nearby Thanh Ha Pottery village. In addition, we run a shuttle bus service to places further afield such as to our private beach at Cua Dai. Alternatively relax and enjoy the hotel environs - the garden pool, have a drink in one of the hotel bars overlooking the rice fields, work out in the gym. Or for those seeking serenity and rejuvenation enjoy our extensive spa menu at La Siesta Spa hidden within the lush garden.

The hotel is managed by our renowned Hanoi Elegance & Essence team of professionals who lead the way in Hanoi. And we now bring the very best service to Hoi An Town.

The hotel is nominated for Service Excellence by World Luxury Awards 2014.

Enjoy your stay with us in Hoi An!
